Cartographers and Photogrammetrists
Cartographers create maps and other visual representations of geographic
information. Photogrammetrists are specialized cartographers who use
aerial photographs and satellite imagery to create maps. Both careers
use a variety of tools and techniques to collect, analyze, and interpret
data, and then create accurate and detailed maps that can be used for a
variety of purposes. People in these careers need a moderate background
in the geosciences for some of their roles, such as:
-
Gathering and analyzing data from a variety of sources, including
satellite imagery, aerial photographs, surveys, and geological
reports to determine how it should be presented on a map.
-
Designing maps using computer software to ensure accuracy and ease
of use. This may involve choosing an appropriate scale, determining
the best way to represent geographical features, and ensuring that
the map is visually appealing or interactive, such as for
navigation.
-
Presenting data in graphs and charts to help people understand
complex information.
-
Maintaining accuracy of maps by conducting field surveys, collecting
new images, and making any necessary adjustments.
