A park naturalist is responsible for educating visitors about the natural resources and ecosystems within a park or protected area to help visitors understand the importance of conservation and stewardship. They may have a focus on geology, hydrology, soil science, or meteorology. Their work requires a moderate to extensive background in the geosciences and involves:

  • Educating visitors through guided hikes, presentations, and providing educational materials on how geological processes have shaped the landscape over time, discuss the impact of climate change on local ecosystems, or demonstrate how water flows through the watershed.

  • Monitoring and protecting park resources by collecting data on wildlife populations, changes in vegetation, or water quality to ensure that the park is being managed sustainably.

  • Working with scientists and researchers to conduct studies and develop management plans for the park.
