Petroleum Pump System Operators, Refinery Operators, and Gaugers are responsible for running and maintaining petroleum refining and distribution systems. All of these jobs require some background in both the geosciences and engineering because it is important to have a good understanding of the petroleum refining process and the equipment used in it,. Their work involves:

  • Monitoring and controlling the flow of oil and gas through pipelines, tanks, and other equipment.

This includes monitoring gauges, valves, and meters to ensure that the flow of oil or gas is accurate and safe.

  • Operating and maintaining the equipment used in petroleum refineries to process crude oil into usable products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, and other by-products.

  • Measuring and keeping records of the quantity of petroleum products that are being transferred from one location to another. This includes using specialized equipment to measure the volume of oil or gas in tanks, pipelines, and other containers.
