Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant and System Operators are responsible for operating and maintaining water and wastewater treatment plants and systems. They require a moderate background in the geosciences, and their duties include:

  • Monitoring and controlling equipment in the water treatment plant. They also perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning and inspecting equipment, replacing parts, and making repairs.

  • Collecting samples, performing tests, and recording data on water quality and the functionality of the plant’s equipment.

  • Responding to emergency situations and making quick decisions to ensure the safety of the public and the environment.

  • Keeping records, preparing reports, and communicating with supervisors and other staff members. They may also be involved in training and mentoring new operators.
