Air Traffic Controllers

Air traffic controllers (ATCs) play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of airspace. In the context of the geosciences, ATCs are responsible for monitoring and directing aircraft movements within designated airspace or flight information regions. Their geoscience-related responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring radar and radio communications to maintain a clear understanding of the current situation in the airspace.

  • Providing pilots with instructions, such as altitude assignments, routes, speed restrictions, as well as weather conditions and atmospheric conditions that can affect these factors.

  • Using mapping software to monitor flights and the space between them.
