Operating Engineers and Other Construction Equipment Operators

Operating engineers and other construction equipment operators work with heavy machinery to assist in the construction, maintenance, and repair of structures and infrastructure. They often work outdoors in all weather conditions and in a variety of settings, from construction sites to mines to oil fields. Their work involves a variety of geoscience-related tasks, including:

  • Setting up, operating, and maintaining excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, and dump trucks to move earth, rocks, and other materials.

  • Following safety protocols and regulations and communicating with others on the job site to ensure that tasks are completed safely and efficiently.

  • Keeping records of the work performed, including materials used, many of which are natural resources.
