Foresters

A forester is a professional who works with trees and forests, managing them to ensure their health and sustainability. Requiring a moderate background in the geosciences, foresters may be involved in a variety of tasks, including:

  • Conducting surveys and inventories of forests to assess their health and productivity and implementing forest management activities such as tree planting, thinning, and harvesting.

  • Monitoring the impact of human activity as well as natural events such as wildfires, floods, and pest outbreaks on forest ecosystems and developing plans for reforestation and restoration after such events.

  • Providing advice to landowners, governments, and communities and educating the public about the importance of forests and sustainable forestry practices.

  • Conducting research on topics such as tree growth, disease, and climate change impacts on forests.

  • Collaborating with other professionals such as ecologists, hydrologists, and soil scientists to understand the interactions between forests and other components of the environment.
