Civil engineering technologists and technicians work in a variety of settings, including construction sites, offices, and laboratories. Their main responsibility is to assist civil engineers in designing, planning, and constructing infrastructure projects such as roads, dams, airports, water treatment plants, and others. People in these careers need a moderate background in the geosciences for some of their roles, such as:

  • Collecting field data such as soil samples, water levels, and topography measurements, which informs them on determining the best location for a project.

  • Designing and drafting detailed construction plans using computer-aided design (CAD) software. These plans include specifications for sourcing materials.

  • Inspecting and testing construction sites to ensure that the project is being built according to plan. They also conduct tests on materials and structures to make sure they are safe and durable.

  • Communicating with other professionals, including geologists and environmentalists, who provide input on project plans, especially environmental impact reports.
