Jewelers and Precious Stone and Metal Workers

Jewelers and precious stone and metal workers are responsible for designing, creating, and repairing jewelry and other decorative items made from precious stones and metals. They may work in a variety of settings, including jewelry stores, repair shops, manufacturing facilities, design studios where they create custom pieces, or museums or archaeological sites. They require a moderate background in the geosciences, especially mineralogy and gemology. Their work typically involves:

  • Knowing the properties of a variety of materials and how to cut, polish, fuse, and solder them. This often includes gold, silver, diamonds, and other gems.

  • Restoring or helping with the conservation of historic jewelry or other artifacts.

  • Designing jewelry or other decorative pieces, either by hand or using computer-aided design (CAD) software.

  • Repairing damaged jewelry or other decorative items.
